DESIGN ICON | Helmet of a Future Past

When it comes to iconic helmet designs, Bell usually takes home the hardware with its classic Bell Star (which has since been reintroduced with modern safety features). Another icon – not nearly as famous – was created by Porsche Design in the ’70s.

As this magazine ad shows, Porsche Design’s new helmet was definitely distinctive. Intended for motorcycle use, it featured a visor that slid up inside the helmet rather than along the outside.  With this innovation came some new functional challenges; I’ve seen several examples with scratched visors from repeated use.  Nevertheless, the idea was intriguing. The helmet shell made use of a two-piece construction to create a variety of color combinations.  I’ve seen other versions that are red and green or white and silver, for example (images from eBay).
