NEWS | Kia Track’ster design process documented by Motor Trend ( TM )

Motor Trend (TM) Magazine got an exclusive behind the scenes look at the way we work by documenting the design process of the recently unveiled Kia Track’ster.

Featured are designers Ray Ng and Matt Zoller along with with Ford design alum exterior manager Erik Klimish and interior manager Enrique Giner. Chief Designer Tom Kearns is also featured. The process began in June 2011 with concept car submissions, Ng and Zoller’s poster-style storyboard was selected for further development.

The story details the rest of the design and fabrication process, and as you can tell from the group photo at the end, there were many more than 5 designers who made the concept come to fruition. All in all its a great detailed look at the design process, even though it may not fully tell the whole story of those of us in production studios with the feasibility and engineering, ergo, manufacturing and cost struggles which we deal with everyday. Nevertheless, it exposes our profession to the masses in a way which will help deter the ideas that A) we draw cars all day and somehow they magically show up and B) we are engineers. Its a worthwhile read, check it out by clicking here.
